Reasons and expert analysis on why sports card values on cards from 1986 to 1992 are extremely low. Full breakdown of market & what to do with the cards.

The shop owner carefully puts the cards back in the box and thanks the customer for bringing them in.. The 1991 Upper Deck Baseball SP1 Michael Jordan was selling for $25.. As the hobby hemorrhaged collectors, supply now far exceeded demand.. Now many sports card collectors are looking to get something for their cards.. The hobby was filled with investors and not collectors.. This isn't always the case as some of today's cards can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but there aren't many.. Not all hope is lost for those of you who have boxes and boxes of cards that aren't worth any money.. The monetary sports card values aren't there.

HISTORIC DISTRICT: Princeton Post 218 American Legion baseball player Jaxon Petrone hits the ball in recent action.. Last Sunday, recent Princeton High grad Petrone got two hits, including a homer, in a losing cause as Post 218 lost 5-3 to Washington Township Post 521 in an elimination game at the N.J. District 4 tournament at West Deptford.. With the Princeton Post 218 American Legion baseball team looking to make its first-ever trip to the New Jersey District tournament, it wanted to clinch a spot by beating Allentown last week rather than relying on help from other teams.. “We played them well the first time, it was Rohan [Sheth] starting in that game too.. It was the fifth inning that was the issue the first time.. “As we started winning more towards the end, it started becoming more of a possibility and as we were playing during that game against Allentown, the guys got more excited.. “I wasn’t as worried about the Princeton High seniors because they have been that team for Princeton the last couple of years that got them to places they hadn’t been to and got some firsts.. “We lost in the end but we played much better.. “They could have lost focus after falling behind 5-1 and thought there goes the season but you know what, they didn’t,” said Gonzalez, whose team ended the summer with an 8-12 record.. I credited people with dealing with a pitcher who was pretty good.. I gave the team credit for scratching out a couple of runs the last few innings.. With Princeton going from four wins last year to eight this summer, Gonzalez is proud of the strides made by the program.

"Does it promote the game? Sure," says an agent. "But at what cost?"

“It’s not really in the spirit of developing prospects,” says a director-level staffer with another team.. “There’s 30 people that like it,” says one agent, “and they all own a team.”. With draft picks still signing and the trade deadline just days away, those staffers are in the thick of it.. Nonetheless, eight people involved in different aspects of the game — from agents to scouting and player development directors to executives at the very top of the baseball operations food chain — made time this week to share their thoughts with The Athletic.. Since the timing of the college and prep seasons hasn’t changed, the extra information gleaned in late June and early July is minimal.. On top of that, scouting staffs find themselves preparing for two drafts instead of one.. The Cape Cod League is in full swing, as is MLB’s Prospect Development Pipeline League, which features many of the top high school players for the next year’s draft.. The first round of this year’s NFL draft drew 10 million viewers, and the first round of the 2022 NBA draft attracted three million.. Unlike in other sports, the vast majority of the top prospects don’t even attend the draft.. Some would like to see the trade deadline moved back to allow more breathing room after the draft.. There is more time to get players into player development and a longer break before the trade deadline.. More people may have watched this year’s draftees be selected, but the late setting means it will take them longer to actually get on a field.

Evgeni Malkin recently had a simple question about the only NHL team he's known: “Do they want me?” Here's how it got to this point.

Penguins general manager Ron Hextall’s answer to that question is “yes” — the GM said Friday he’s hoping to make a trade that would offer cap relief, which would also let the team more comfortably sign Malkin — but stalled negotiations between Pittsburgh and Malkin’s agent, J.P. Barry, have cast considerable doubt in Malkin’s mind.. At the very least, Malkin believes the Penguins only want him back on their terms — and their terms and Malkin’s asks have been far apart.. Malkin has tried to remain outwardly calm, saying “everything is OK, life is good.” But close friends, including current teammates, said that Malkin is “devastated” by the lack of movement with the Penguins on what he anticipates will be his final NHL contract.. Mario Lemieux, then the Penguins’ majority co-owner, assured Malkin the Penguins “would take care of him,” multiple ownership sources said.. Before Malkin’s surgery last summer, his agent and the Penguins planned to begin talks on a new contract.. Lemieux, the ownership sources said, believed it’s important for the Penguins and for himself that Crosby and Malkin — forever linked in franchise lore as the foundation of three Cup clubs in 2009, 2016 and 2017 — retired as Penguins.. Malkin and his camp viewed Lemieux’s promise to “take care of” Malkin after the knee surgery as a confirmation that Malkin would finish his career in Pittsburgh.. Hextall said last summer that it “probably made sense” to delay talks with Malkin’s agent until Malkin recovered — and the Penguins’ doctors said Malkin would likely not be back before December.. Lemieux likely would have pushed Hextall to get a deal with Malkin done, because Lemieux viewed Malkin as a “legacy player.” Hextall, whose task is to keep the Penguins a contender without sacrificing their future — a monumental challenge — is looking at Malkin as merely an asset to be retained or lost.. The Penguins don’t think that about Malkin.

There’s something about a clever and funny baseball pun that people just love. Poking fun at America’s pastime doesn’t get old!

With words like pinch, bat, hit, and base it’s easy to come up with a wide variety of baseball puns to play with.. Us baseball players know our way around the bases.. A baseball player was a thief.. They call me the Arizona D’Backs because I always play ball games late into the night What did the baseball glove say to the ball?…”Catch ya later!” Are we in the bullpen?. It’s just a batter game!. If you sing while playing baseball you may not get a good pitch What is a baseball player’s favorite thing about going to the park?… The swings!. As a baseball player, I know my way around the bases.. Why is Fenway Park the coolest place to be?… Because it’s full of fans.. Never hit the ump… The Umpire Strikes Back Baseball players sometimes have sign-us trouble.

As a baseball fan, you’ve probably heard some version of this story: In 1952, Pittsburgh’s Ralph Kiner led the league in home runs for the seventh straight year. Six of those seven Pirate teams were pretty terrible, but that ’52 group was particularly bad — going 42-112-1 and finishing last by more than 20 games.

I’m not saying that Rickey didn’t at some point say the line about how they could have finished last without Kiner.. Rickey believed the Pirates finished last in some part BECAUSE of Kiner.. As soon as the season ended, Rickey immediately put Kiner up on the trade market.. Well, if you do a cursory search … you find people who will insist the story actually begins with Bill Veeck.. Veeck grew up in baseball — his father, Bill Veeck Sr., was president of the Chicago Cubs.. And then there’s the story of Ned Garver.. This was in part because he pitched well (in July, he pitched four consecutive complete games in which he allowed just one run), and, in part, because he caught some breaks (on May 14, he gave up 10 runs against Detroit but got the victory anyway).. He started to make a big deal about how Garver had a chance to become the first pitcher in many years — going all the way back to the Chicago White Sox’s beautifully nicknamed Hollis “Sloppy” Thurston in 1924 — to win 20 games for a last-place team.. And so it came down to the final day of the season, Ned Garver and the Browns vs. the Chicago White Sox for Garver’s 20th win!. The Globetrotters won the game 29-17, but as soon as it was over, Lavelli put on a suit and played the accordion for the fans.. And third — you were waiting for this, I’m sure — Ned Garver met with Veeck during the offseason to negotiate his 1952 contract.. And Bill Veeck said: “We could have finished last without you.”. See, after the season ended, Garver did approach Veeck for a raise.

No one can resist nature's call, but for athletes, knowing when to let it flow can be the difference between victory and defeat.

Over the years, Gross had tried every technique NFL players and other hyper-hydrated athletes use to surreptitiously relieve themselves during games.. His tight pants, no-fly spandex and all the tape on his gloved hands and mangled fingers made it cumbersome to kneel behind the bench and pee into a cup (a method that was so popular among his teammates that rookies often had a hard time differentiating which cups contained actual Gatorade).. And so, in one of the final home games of his career, during a TV timeout with the defense on the field, the three-time Pro Bowl blocker figured he had nothing to lose -- he would proudly march off the field toward a small bathroom used mostly by field staff, where for once he could pee in peace.. Streeter Lecka/Getty Images THE SHEER FREQUENCY and powerful pull of the pee break makes urine perhaps the most influential and disruptive liquid in sports.. "Imagine you're an athlete, you've just consumed a ridiculous amount of liquid on a hot day, you can't get off the field and you're in terrible pain," Snyder says.. The pain and disruption caused by holding urine for too long essentially sets off alarms that dampen cognitive activities in the frontal lobes -- the ones athletes especially rely upon -- in order for the body to manage more proximal problems.. "Guys are peeing all over the sideline in every game, into cups, on the ground, in towels, behind the bench, in their pants, everywhere," says Panthers center Ryan Kalil, who covered this topic and others in The Rookie Handbook , co-authored by Gross and Geoff Hangartner.. But the need to stay hydrated, combined with a maze of cultural hang-ups and poorly designed facilities, creates a nightmare for athletes who are just looking for a bathroom break.. If a glimpse of Chastain's sports bra after her Cup-winning penalty kick in 1999 caused such a ridiculous uproar, she can't even imagine what fans would do if a player today copped a squat by the U.S. bench during a game, as so many of her male counterparts do.. Former U.S. women's national soccer team player Brandi Chastain says female athletes have a tougher time than their male counterparts: "You just can't squat in the middle of a Women's World Cup game.. On the matter of urination, the rules read like a junior high student handbook, allowing competitors to "leave the court for a reasonable time for a toilet break," while falling just short of asking Roger Federer to put the seat down when finished.
