How far should an untucked shirt hang?
A good rule of thumb is that an untucked shirt should come to the middle of the butt. Another good rule of thumb is that the front bottom shirt tail should end midway down the fly of your pants.
Let the shirt fall naturally. You want the hem to just hit the top of your butt (no lower than 25% down your cheeks). If you'd prefer not to divide your bottom into quadrants, you can also aim for about an inch above your back pocket.
Is an untucked dress shirt unprofessional? On specific occasions wearing an untucked dress shirt could come off as unprofessional, yes. However, that's not to say it's a bad look overall. Given the right time and place, an untucked dress shirt gives off a casual and stylish vibe.
Casual: If you're are wearing a short-sleeved shirt, polo or t-shirt to a casual occasion, always leave it untucked. Smart Casual: If you are wearing a casual shirt by itself leave it untucked, however, if you are wearing a shirt paired with a casual jacket or coat, tuck it in for smart casual occasions.
The optimal length for an untucked shirt would be 1 inch higher than the “butthigh” The front length should fall no longer than the front crotch point and no shorter than 2 inches above the front crotch point. A good guideline would be to have your shirt's front length fall right at the bottom of your zipper.
Here are a few guidelines: Shirts that are made with a flat bottom hem are meant to be worn untucked. But if the shirt has visible “tails” — that is to say, the hem varies in length, rather than being even all the way around — it should always be tucked in. If your midriff is exposed when you raise your arms, that means your shirt is too short. If you mostly plan to wear the shirt tucked, do the test again, with your shirt tucked in.
Back: Measure 3" down from the center of the collar. Back designs are often 10" x 10" for adult small, medium, large, and x-large V-neck or scoop neck shirts. 11" x 11" is a good size for adult x-large.
The buttons should lay flat and there should be about 2-3 inches of extra fabric on each side of your body so that you can move comfortably. Your shirt should be snug, but not tight under your arms and across your back.
With jeans: Rarely tuck in
"A tucked-in shirt doesn't usually work with jeans for the same reason that it does work with formal trousers: because the smartness levels don't match. Only tuck a shirt in if your jeans are dark and straight or slim, with a longer rise so they sit on your waist rather than your hips."
